It was earlier this year when we first got a glimpse of the Volkswagen I.D. Buzz at the Detroit Auto Show. Since then, it remained a concept car until last Friday, when the German car manufacturer finally confirmed that the vehicle would hit dealerships in 2022!

The Volkswagen I.D. Buzz announcement was made by the car company at Monterey, California, ahead of this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The new vehicle was said to be the car maker’s homage to the iconic Microbus that rose to popularity between 1950 and 1980 in North America.

This time, the iconic Microbus will run on electricity as part of Volkswagen’s newest line of electric vehicles being developed to replace its gasoline-powered lineup. The vehicle will fall under the I.D. electric car range of the company and will be designed based on the famous T1, T2, and T3 Campers ‘hippy mobile’ that our grandparents loved.

At Pebble Beach, Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess was quoted as saying:

“After the presentations at the global motor shows in Detroit and Geneva, we received a large number of letters and emails from customers who said, ‘please build this car.’ The Microbus has long been part of the California lifestyle. Now we’re bringing it back by reinventing it as an electric vehicle.”

The Volkswagen I.D. Buzz: Initial Features, Design, and Performance

The electric Microbus will be produced in two versions. The first version will be a high-end Volkswagen I.D. Buzz variant that will have an all-wheel-drive capability. It will be powered by a 111 kWh battery pack with 369 total horsepower output.

Based on estimates, the high-end version will have a car range of up to 270 miles on a single charge. It will also be able to go from zero to 60 miles per hour in under five seconds with a top speed of 99 mph.

On the other hand, the entry-level Volkswagen I.D. Buzz will be a rear-wheel drive that can produce around 268 total horsepower from its 83 kWh battery pack. Its range is estimated to be around 200 miles.

The Volkswagen I.D. Buzz exterior and interior designs are noticeably modernized. For instance, the exterior of the Microbus will have LED strip lights that will separate the iconic two-tone paintwork of the van. The Buzz will also sport a new headlight and LED bumper design that closely resembles a smile.

A tablet will make up the dashboard of the electric vehicle, and it will have a small rectangular steering wheel. Volkswagen definitely knows how to make cute vehicles!

Apparently, the car manufacturer will retain the original concept of swiveling seats so the driver and passenger seats can be moved around to face the passengers at the back. This is just another feature that shows Volkswagen’s commitment to creating autonomous vehicles.
