Every year, thousands of nerds, gamers, and pop culture fanatics gather at the annual San Diego Comic-con.
Originating in 1974, the tradition grows every year, showcasing artists, fan-favorite actors and creators, and now: special releases.
What was the biggest surprise of SDCC 2017?The Biggest Releases of SDCC 2017 And MoreClick To Tweet
These days SDCC isn’t limited to comic books. Similar to E3 or Pax Prime, Comic-Con has grown past its roots into a proving ground for television and movie studios. Companies like DC, Marvel, and Netflix are on display every year, and they are eager to impress fans and critics alike.
So, while the critics may have benchmarked the “winners” and “losers” of SDCC 2017, it’s fair to say that everybody won. After all, everyone got to see a fantastic lineup of trailer releases, events, and signings.
Let’s start with the trailers.
Super Heroes, Fairytales, and Legos: Oh My!
If this comic con was any indication, 2017 will be a good year for movies.
As expected, Marvel and DC unveiled new trailers for their upcoming films. A new Justice League trailer dropped, giving DC comics fans some hope for the future.
Not to be outdone, Marvel brought their “A” game. The new Thor: Ragnarok trailer featured more of the powerful Tessa Thompson and the reveal of Loki as a “good guy”.
Netflix debuted new trailers for fairy tale cop show Bright and the long awaited but questioned Death Note.
For the Sci-fi fans, SDCC 2017 was a breath of fresh air. We already covered the insanely cool Pacific Rim: Uprising trailer and what it means for the world of tech. If the far future isn’t to your taste, check out Ready Player One. Jumping off the current craze of video games and virtual reality, this film burst onto the scene with a trailer chock full of references to classic 80s movies like Back to the Future, Tron, Akira, and more.
Who says Cyberpunk is dead?
The Shape of Water trailer produced one of the biggest reveals. The trailer features a mute woman working in a secretive location housing an amphibious creature resembling one of our favorite Hellboy associates. While it’s not confirmed if this creature is Abe Sapien from earlier films, Doug Jones is listed on the cast roster for the film on IMDB. Cross your fingers, folks, but even if it isn’t Abe, the movie looks pretty cool.
But What About the Cosplay?
As cool and exciting as the panels and announcements are, the incredible and detailed cosplays that Comic-con goers produce is arguably just as or more impressive.
Wonder Woman, Jason Vorhees, and the Radish spirit from Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away all made appearances at 2017’s SDCC. For that matter, so did…a steampunk Darth Vader with bubbles shooting out of his arms? Yeah, that happened. And it was awesome.
This year’s panoply of cosplay creations did not disappoint.
Celebrities and media figures like to get in on the cosplay action too. Adam Savage from Mythbusters has a reputation for going incognito around events like these. Last year, Adam disguised himself as a character from the Hayao Miyazaki film My Neighbor Totoro. Jamie Lee Curtis cosplayed as Vega from the Street Fighter franchise at EVO. This year, a sprightly and playful Pink Ranger made her way into the dens of San Diego Comic-con 2017.
This enthusiastic cosplayer was none other than Lupita Nyong’o known for her stellar performances in 12 Years a Slave, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and soon-to-be-released Black Panther. By the way, she did it the second day too, switching her costume from the Pink Ranger to Kylo Ren.
Comic-con For All
But let’s get back to Adam Savage, because he was a part of something magical. The Mythbusters veteran partnered with the charity Magic Wheelchairs on his YouTube series “Tested”. This organization provides high-tech cosplay themed wheelchairs for kids at SDCC 2017. Not only did the Batmobile come equipped with GPS, the Fortress of Solitude had a functioning Command Crystal. Wonder Woman’s invisible jet also made an appearance as did Aquagirl’s chariot with moving seahorse heads. With the combination of curiosity and technology, this charity showcases the best of what ingenuity and kindness can do for the future.
“More Human Than Human”
This year’s comic con offered a wide variety of well produced and highly anticipated releases.

At this point, we would ask “Who do you think ‘won’ SDCC 2017 and why?”, but we all know it was the new Blade Runner 2049 trailer. I mean seriously, did you see it?
So the question becomes: Who do you think LOST SDCC 2017 and why?
